One of my biggest fears has always been having my kids locked inside of a vehicle on a hot summer day.... With a little luck and some help from Ayzlyn I got a taste of humility.
Ayzie wanted to open the doors to the car as we were leaving the Pearl Nelson Center. I opened both doors on the drivers side and put her in as she continued to push the buttons on the key. I turned on the car and pushed the car door softly hoping to just make room for someone to park next to me if they needed to. I grabbed Adi and when I tried opening the car door to put her in it wouldn’t open. It was locked. Then came the moment of pure horror...had I locked my 2 yr old in the car on a hot (102) summer day? I ran over to my door to find the door had barely latched and although I pulled the door with all my might I could not get it opened. Luckily Lauren, Adi’s OT, walked by to see if she could help and called for reinforcements inside. Someone called the police, Jeane (Adi’s PT) took Adi in so she wouldn’t have to be in the sun, and everyone else took a turn yanking on the half open door. I tried instructing Az on how to open the door. I had never taught her how to unlock the door since it has been the only way to ensure she doesn’t open the door while we are on the road. Then I had an idea to have her go to the keys and push the button to have the doors open. Instead of pushing the buttons she managed to turn on the windshield wipers and half turn off the car. That’s when Az decided she had tried enough and went back to her seat grabbed her backpack and proceeded to take everything out of it so she could play. It was only about 8 mins after the AC was turned off a cop came to the rescue and opened the half opened door.
I got in the car turned the key in the ignition to find my car wouldn’t start. Lauren volunteered her new car to jump mine but didn’t know how to unlatch her hood or where the negative charge was. We both looked all around the battery. We did eventually see there was a bolt on the side of the car which had a (-) symbol on it. FYI for people like me, you only need a metal piece to ground the black cable for a jump which I found out from my wonderful husband on my drive home. =)
